What Is It?
The sciatic nerve runs from the lumbar spine all the way down to your toes on both sides of your body. It’s made up of the last three nerves that exit the lumbar spine. It passes by the lumbar vertebrae, the SI joint, and a muscle called the piriformis. Typically, it’s one of these three areas that is irritated.
We begin with a thorough examination, including surface EMG scans, to identify where the nerve irritation is located. Depending on your specific situation, Dr. Allam will recommend a customized care plan to help resolve the issue. This may include chiropractic adjustments, stretches, or tailored therapies to alleviate the muscle tension and contraction built up around the nerve and reduce nerve inflammation and irritation.
Other therapies that can be beneficial include interferential current or e-stim, cold laser therapy, traction, spinal decompression, massage, and myofascial release. We also provide instruction on several at-home stretches that can help in between your visits.
Recovery varies depending on various factors, including how long the irritation has been present. It typically takes about 4-6 visits to experience full relief, and many patients choose to come in for regular maintenance care once or twice a month to help prevent the problem from recurring.
